  • UNICEF has defined 3 types of Street Children:

  •   Street living children: children who ran away from their families and live alone on the street.
  •   Street working children: children who spend most of their time on the streets, fending for themselves, but returning home on a regular basis.
  •   Children from street families: children who live on the streets with their families.
  • Khushi Nepal principally adopts this definition.

  •   Is there specific age group of street children to be eligible to receive service from Khushi Nepal?

  • Khushi Nepal primarily focuses its programs and activities on street children of age-group under 18. Khushi Nepal has observed that street children issues cannot be solved without addressing the issues of street youths and other street inhabitants. Therefore, in many cases Khushi Nepal also works for the street inhabitants of other age group.

  •   Where Are Street Children Found?

  • Street children are found in diverse areas, so it is very difficult to precisely locate them. However, they are more likely to be found in following parts of urban area:

  •   Tourist area
  •   Busy market area
  •   Kabad –(junkyard)
  •   Temple and Monastery areas
  •   Slum and squatted areas
  •   Dumping or garbage collection site
  •   Bus station
  •   Under the bridge and around river banks
  •   Around Street children working organizations
  •   What Dangers Do Street Children Face?

  • Street children has been facing the following challenges and difficulties:

  •   Child labor
  •   Sexual abuse
  •   Drug addiction
  •   Deprivation from the basic rights like food, shelter, clothes, medical and health
  •   Life in street is itself most difficult to survive for children below 18 years of age
  •   Physical injury
  •   How Can I Help A Street Child?

  • You can join or team up with us to support street children in following ways:

  •   How Do Governments Respond To Street Children?

  • Only a stable government can have concrete plans & implementations. But, over two decades Nepal has been suffering from governmental instability. Due to this instability, government responses towards Street Children has been varying from time to time.

  •   Some have programs that generally involve placing the children in orphanages, juvenile homes or correctional institutions.
  •   Some governments support or work with NGOs.
  •   Some governments institute round-ups to remove all children from the city streets and deposit them elsewhere or incarcerate them.
  •   What Rights Do Street Children Have?

  • Though street children have all the basic rights granted to every citizen, child and human being, these rights are often ignored or taken away. Though most governments have ratified the UN convention on the Rights of the Child, they take harsh measures under the purview of national prestige or image.

    If you want to join us and observe the life of street children in Nepal, Khushi Nepal can arrange for you a safe and healthy environment to stay at a cheaper price. Khushi Nepal however at present doesn't provide residential facilities for volunteers.
